My Shopping Trip 7/31/10

Learned something new this week... don't EVER do your shopping list the morning of your trip, it mucked me up a bit this week. :( I usually make my list and gather the coupons for each of the stores ahead of time, throughout the week. This week was hectic, so I did it first thing this morning... at like 5:45 AM... not a good idea. LOL Some of my coupons were for the wrong item, wrong size, ya, needless to say this week wasn't as good as some. Here's the coupon items / deals I got by store:

Walmart:

Frank's Hot Sauce - $2.22 X2
used $1/2 - minus $1
total - $1.72 ea

Brut Anti-Perspirant Spray - $3.42
used $1/1 - minus $1
total - $2.42

And this was where I discovered the first of my brain cramps, forgot the coupon for DD's juiceboxes, so paid full for them. Ugh! Also did diapers, wipes, the new All You mag, and a few other non-sale items. Only really saved $2 for the day here. :(

Discount Food Store:

Dog Food - $2.29

Cat Litter - $2.99

Betty Crocker Fruit by the Foot - $1.19 X2
used $.50/2 - minus $.50
total - $.94 ea

Right Guard Total Defense 5 - $1.69
used $1/1 - minus $1
total - $.69

Colgate Total toothpaste - $1.49 X2
used $1/1 X2 - minus $2
total - $.49 ea

A whole whopping $9.33 OOP here today. Not bad for all that!

Price Chopper:

Dannonino 6 pk - $2 X2
used $1/1 X2 doubled - minus $4
total - FREE

Dannon Crush Cups 4 pk - $2 X2
used $1/1 X2 doubled - minus $4
total - FREE

(I know, I know... MORE yogurt! LOL Well... it was free, I couldn't resist!)

Pop Tarts - $2 X2
used $1/2 doubled - minus $2
total - $1 ea

Fresh Corn on the Cob - 8/$2

Strawberries, 1 lb - $.98

Haggen Dazs - 2/$6
used $1/1 doubled - minus $2
total - $2 ea

Land o Lakes Fresh Buttery Taste - BO@$2.99 GO Free
used $.50/1 doubled - minus $1
total - $.99 ea

Juicy Juice - 2/$5
used $1/2 doubled - minus $2
total - $1.50 ea

Pringles Super Stack - 2/$3 X4
used $1/4 doubled - minus $2
total - $1 ea

Suddenly Salad - 4/$5
used $.50/2 doubled - minus $1
total - $1 ea

Airwick AquaMist - $2.50
used $1/1 doubled - minus $2
total - $.50

Sunkist 2 ltr - $1.69 X4
used $1/2 X2 doubled - minus $4
total - $.69 ea

Total Price Chopper trip before AdvantEdge and Coupons - $94.42
Total items - 46
AdvantEdge savings - $22.43
Coupon savings - $24.00
Total savings - $46.43

Total OOP: $47.99

Got a few other items as well at PC, but was happy with the final outlay. And I have MORE YOGURT!!! LOL!!

Grand Union:

Minute Maid Frozen Juice Bars - $3
used $.75/1 doubled - minus $1.50
total - $1.50

Wishbone Dressing - 10/$10 (I only got 3)

Hillshire Farms Lunchmeat, Sm Pkg - $2.79 X2
used $1/2 doubled - minus $2
total - $1.79 ea

Tyson Chicken Tenders - 2/$5

Total Grand Union trip before Grand Savings and Coupons - $39.23
Grand Savings - $2.96
Coupon savings - $3.50
Total savings - $6.46

Total OOP: $32.77

This was my next major brain cramp of the day. Had a coupon for the Wishbone, wrong size. Had couons for the Tyson Chicken, wrong one. Had a coupon for Bounty Basic 8 roll paper towels that were on sale for $3.99, I would have gotten them for $1.99 and they were out. :( They did offer to raincheck for me but my coupon expired today so I declined. Oh, almost forgot, I had a coupon for $1/2 Booth Bros milk and was all excited and neither PC or GU carry Booth Bros. Huh? Have to say I was a little shocked by this. Also had to get beer for hubby, so almost $14 of this total bill is that.

Well, that's it for this week. Hopefully next week I'll get my ducks in a row a little sooner in the week and plan a little better.

Got my inserts! :)

Stopped at a gas station on the way home last night and grabbed two papers, the local one for the town my Dad lives in and I splurged and got the Boston Sunday Globe. Pretty interesting to see the differences in the inserts in the two differnt papers. Nothing radical really, but still interesting to see. Haven't had the time to clip yet, hopefully will be doing that tonight... hopefully... (as DD is screaming at my feet) LOL

Sunday, July 25, 2010

Hmmmm...

Slightly freaking out today... went to the store this morning for my usual coffee and paper, and noticed that all they had was the local Sunday paper, nothing else there yet. So I checked the local paper for the inserts before buying it as it looked kinda skinny. Lo and behold... not a stinkin' insert to be had!! Not to mention there was only the Price Chopper flyer and the Parade mag, nothing else. Seems a little odd to me. I guess that means I'm stopping for a paper somewhere else as we are headed to NH today to visit Pepe and Meme and some Aunts and Uncles that are visiting from out west and up north. :) Speaking of which, I will be occupied with the raod trip, so probably won't get any matchups posted today, I'll have to see how late we get home.

My Shopping Trip 7/24/10 - Price Chopper and Grand Union

Not a huge trip this week. I hit Walmart (no deals there, just getting diapers and lunch stuff for DD), Price Chopper (pretty weak sale items), and Grand Union (better than PC). The budget is a little skinny, so we'll be relying on some of our stockpile of frozen stuff for dinners for the week. So I just picked up a few items we needed to round out meals and other necessities. Here's the rundown:

Price Chopper:

Arm & Hammer laundry detergent - BO@$5.49 GO Free
used $1/2 doubled - minus $2
total - $1.75 ea

Believe it or not, that was it for coupon items at Price Chopper! There were a couple other ok deals I picked up:

Dole Bagged Salad - BO@$3.49 GO Free
total - $1.75 ea

Klondike bars, 6 pack - $1.99
saved $1.50

Thomas' bagels - $2.50
saved $1.49

Also got a few other items, milk, etc.

Total Price Chopper trip before AdvantEdge and Coupons - $40.44
Total items - 12
AdvantEdge savings - $13.47
Coupon savings - $2
Total savings - $15.47

Total OOP: $24.97

Grand Union:

Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts - $1.88/lb (pkg I got was $7.84)
used $1 off any chicken when you buy Kraft Shaker Cheese, doubled - minus $2
total - $1.40/lb

Naturally Delicious Salad Dressing - 2/$4 (X3)
used $1/1 doubled X3 - minus $6
total - FREE

Naturally Delicious BBQ Sauce - $2.29 (X3)
used $1/1 doubled X3 - minus $6
total - $.29 ea

Garelick Over the Moon Choc. Milk - $3.29
used $1/1 doubled - minus $2
total - $1.29

Also got beer for hubby and the Kraft Shaker Cheese (to get the $ off the chicken) here, oh, and a soda for the ride home. :)

Total Grand Union trip before Grand Savings and Coupons - $50.39
Total items - 11
Grand Savings - $7.37
Coupon savings - $16
Total savings - $23.37

Total OOP: $27.02

All in all not horrible, but not fantastic either... I'm hoping next week's budget is better and next week's sales are better.

So now what do I do with all this yogurt?

ROFL!! Yup, I currently have the tail end of a 6-pack of yogurt, a second 6-pack, and another 4-pack in my fridge now... and oh, let's see, about seven 6-packs and three 4-packs in the freezer. Note to people saying "In the FREEZER?!?!?!" Yup, it does thaw out ok, in a pinch, and ya, ever heard of frozen yogurt? Make your own man! It's cheap and yummy!! Ok, back to topic, I managed to get all this yogurt for $.19 ea for the 6-packs and $.24 to $.49 for the 4-packs (bigger cups on the 4-packs). So ya, figured it was worth it since the kiddo has a yogurt a day, if not two, they are a tasty summer treat when frozen, and they were dirt cheap!

Pretty pointless post, but I found it amusing that the first item I manage to stockpile is yogurt, of all things... LOL

On another note, this was the first weekend I flew solo shopping! The little one has been feeling a little under the weather this past week, running a fever, being crabby... so I decided it was probably in everyone's best interests if she stayed at home with Dada while I went shopping. I think this might be the reason I went a little over budget this week. LOL When she goes with me, I have my list, the coupons for the items, and that's it. This week I brought my coupon binder with me, and although I will say I got some great deals, I did get some stuff we didn't need right now, but will need at some point in the future. I also had a bunch of really good value coupons expiring this week and next, so I want to get them used up. And possibly stockpile some stuff in the meantime. So although I spent a tad bit more than I wanted, I got ALOT of stuff, and I know it will all come out in the wash!

My Shopping Trip 7/17/10 - Price Chopper, not such great deals this week.

Like the title says, not the greatest deals this week, did better at the Discount Store! But I did score some good sales and coupon items this week:

Hormel Refrigerated Entree - $4.99

used $1/1 Hormel Entree doubled - minus $2

Tyson Honey Batter Chicken Tenders - $5

used $1/2 doubled - minus $2
total: $2.49 ea

AirWick Aqua Mist - $2.50
used $1/1 doubled - minus $2
total: $.50

Total items - 36
Bags Credit - $.21
AdvantEdge savings - $18.74
Coupon savings - $24.25
Total savings - $42.99

Total OOP - $68.89

Not the greatest of trips this week, but an amazing improvement over "before coupons" days! Now to start planning for next week! hehe

My Shopping Trip 7/17/10 - Hubby's Wallgreens trip and Other Store finds!

Have I mentioned how much I adore my hubby? LOL He volunteered to do a Wallgreens run for me this week because of a few sale items, so a bonus trip this week! Here's the deals he picked up on 7/16:

Combos - $.99 ea X2
used $1/2 - minus $1
total: $.49 ea

Welch's Grape Juice, 64 oz - 2/$6
used $.75/1, X2 - minus $1.50
total: $2.25 ea

Golden Grahams Cereal - 2/$4
used $1/2 - minus $1
total: $1.50 ea

I also wanted to do the Charmin 6-pack for $2.99 with store coupon and then use $1/1 manufacturer coupon, getting the 6-pack for $1.99, but they were out of stock and I didn't tell Hubby to get a raincheck. Oh well, all in all not bad for $8.48 out of pocket.

No really great sales at Price Chopper this week, unfortunately. BUT I did discover last week that my Discount Store takes manufacturer coupons, so I did pretty well there! Hit 4 places this week, here's the rundown of sale items / coupon items / deals at the other stores:

Total non-Price Chopper stores: $89.33. I look at that number and cringe, but then I remember we still have a little one in diapers, and that I needed laundry detergent (no coupons this week for that unfortunately), and that all adds up. I'll plan on grabbing more backstock of the staples when there are good sales.

Recipe of the day - Rachael's Huevos Rancheros Tostadas

I discovered that the Price Chopper website has a really great recipes section and found this one and thought it looked muy, muy delicioso! :) Original recipe for Rachael's Huevos Rancheros Tostadas here.

Yield: Makes 4 BIG servings

Ingredients:

8 oz. chorizo sausage, casing removed (located near packaged kielbasa in market)
1 drizzle extra virgin olive oil
1/2 small cooking onion, minced
1 clove garlic, chopped fine
1 can (14 oz.) diced tomatoes in juice
1 can (4.5 oz.) green diced chili peppers, drained well
A few Cilantro leaves, chopped very well (optional)
2 pinches dried oregano
Salt, to taste
Pepper, to taste
4 tortillas
8 oz. cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese, shredded

2 pats butter
4 large cage free eggs
Salt, to taste

Directions:

Cook chopped chorizo in a small pan over medium high heat to heat through. Set aside.

Add a drizzle of oil and cook onion and garlic 2 or 3 minutes. Add tomatoes and chilies, cilantro, oregano, salt and pepper. Heat through and reduce heat to low.

Heat a griddle pan over medium to medium high heat. Place a tortilla on griddle. Heat 30 seconds on the first side, then flip and top one half of tortilla with cheese and a handful of browned sausage then fold each tortilla in half.

Flip stuffed tortillas and heat reverse side a minute more. Transfer to a serving plate and repeat process with remaining tortillas and fillings.

Return small skillet that you cooked sausage in to stove over medium heat. Add half a pat of butter and fry one egg at a time, breaking yolk to hard fry. Season with a touch of salt. Top each stuffed tostada with a fried egg and tomato chili sauce.

That sounds like an amazing breakfast/lunch/dinner to me!!

Then scored bananas for $.59/lb, found a Cover Girl makeup I needed for $2.99, and ended up only spending $13.80 for all of it. Also had to swing through Walmart for weekly baby supplies, but no great deals there this week. :( Oh well, there's always next week! Adios and happy shopping!

Recipe of the day - Oven Empenadas

My MIL makes these and they are amazing! This is not her recipe, that is a closely guarded secret! LOL These are the ones I've made, and they come out pretty good. I have also used pre-made packaged pie crusts instead of making the dough and that works fine too.

DOUGH:

4-5 c. flour
3/4-1 c. shortening
3/4 c. cold milk with 2 tsp. salt added
2 egg yolks

FILLING:

1 lb. hamburger, browned
1 med. onion, chopped and cooked
3-4 hard boiled eggs, chopped
Raisins and olives, chopped

Add egg yolks to milk and stir until well mixed. Cut shortening into flour and add all ingredients together.
Do not knead. Let rest overnight in refrigerator. Next day shape dough into balls and roll out into "empanadas" 6 inch in diameter.

Fill the empanadas with hamburger, cooked onions, hard boiled eggs, black olives and raisins. Close dough and pinch down before brushing. Brush them with milk and egg white mixture. Bake on greased cookie sheet at 400 degrees until golden.

Notes: You can also use pretty much any ground meat for a filling, or add some cooked rice to the mix. I have also done taco-style empenadas and used taco seasoning on the meat and put shredded cheese inside. The options are endless!
